Dinner in the Dark – “More than”

At the weekend we hosted Dinner in the Dark as a fundraiser to support Darkroom getting to Edinburgh Fringe Festival. An idea posed to us by friend and Supper Club host Tom Oxley…. and we are thrilled to announce the whole event was seriously in the category of MORE THAN! We are continually in awe that by taking just one sense away, folks can be transported to someplace else, to think in new ways, just like we discovered with Darkroom.

In this case with Dinner in the Dark, blindfolds created sensory overload, a huge pleasure and fascination in food and it’s journey to your mouth. As hosts we loved watching people cup their hands over a plate of food to test temperature and chat away to each other without having to look.

“So ordinary, but so strange” we agreed.

We received a wonderful review from a lunchtime diner, which allows you to get an idea of the experience..

Hi KlangHaus/Neutrinos,

Thought I’d jot down a few thoughts following the excellent dinner in the dark.

I loved the overall sensory feel of the event. Music just beautiful and food tasty. Could have kept my mask on all the time – felt like coming back down to earth when I removed my mask. Preferred to stay in the somewhat altered state than return to conversation. Would be good to have a talkless dinner available too in your program. Also I knew what was coming sometimes hearing reactions from folk on the other table.

So lovely to just be present for the tastes, textures, flavours and sounds. Good to have a variety of eating styles – finger food, sip, knife & fork & spoon. Made me aware of my usual eating styles and things like fork weight and knife resistance. Found I had food on my fork 95% of the time.

Main difference besides heightened tastes was the unexpected size of some of the mouthfuls stabbed by my fork – like the unexpected oral pirouette of a whole asparagus.

Loved the lettuce grape& cheese starter – such a pleasure to finger eat.

Everything appeared much bigger finding large pieces of food still after eating some time.

Masks were so comfortable.

Loved the way the music & harmonies rolled round the room and the intimacy of words and melodies being played so close to my head.

The spicy after-flavour of the curry dish mingled beautifully with the following music. And – I loved hearing the street sounds and ‘jump jump’ once, wondering what is was, and then after next course hearing the NY fire dept story and meaning was then added to the sounds I’d previously heard – more of that would have been great – anecdotes, descriptions poetry in addition to your lovely songs & harmonies.

Sound of the sea near start I thought  we were in for some seafood (eg cockles, oyster) but that’s not everyone’s bag.

Such a beautiful event I felt I was on another plane of sensory existence and was so happy to be with you all and ALIVE.

Hope this is useful,

So many thanks.
